    Quantum mechanics and the concept of joint probability.Michael J. W. Hall - 1989 - Foundations of Physics 19 (2):189-207.
The concepts of joint probability as implied by the Copenhagen and realist interpretations of quantum mechanics are examined in relation to (a) the rules for manipulation of probabilistic quantities, and (b) the role of the Bell inequalities in assessing the completeness of standard quantum theory. Proponents of completeness of the Copenhagen interpretation are required to accept a modification of the classical laws of probability to provide a mechanism for complementarity. A new formulation of the locality postulate is given, not involving (...)

In the second edition of this groundbreaking text in non-Western philosophy, sixteen experts introduce some of the great philosophical traditions in the world. The essays unveil exciting, sophisticated philosophical traditions that are too often neglected in the western world. The contributors include the leading scholars in their fields, but they write for students coming to these concepts for the first time. Building on revisions and updates to the original, this new edition also considers three philosophical traditions for the first time—Jewish, (...)

Eigenstates in the Many Interacting Worlds Approach: Focus on 2D Ground States.Hannes Herrmann, Michael J. W. Hall, Howard M. Wiseman & Dirk-André Deckert - 2024 - In Angelo Bassi, Sheldon Goldstein, Roderich Tumulka & Nino Zanghi (eds.), Physics and the Nature of Reality: Essays in Memory of Detlef Dürr. Springer. pp. 125-140.
The Many-Interacting-Worlds (MIW) approach to a quantum theory without wave functions proposed in [8] leads naturally to numerical integrators of the Schrödinger equation on comoving grids. As yet, little is known about concrete MIW models for more than one spatial dimension and/or more than one particle. In honour of Detlef Dürr, we report on a further development of the MIW approach to treat arbitrary degrees of freedom and provide a numerical proof of concept for ground states in 2d. The latter (...)

    Plato and the Individual. [REVIEW]J. W. R. - 1965 - Review of Metaphysics 18 (4):775-775.
This careful and thorough study should lay to rest the charge that Plato allowed the individual no good of his own, but subordinated him entirely to the state. Virtue is within the reach of every man, not just the philosopher. Hall argues that the early Socratic dialogues show a progressive rejection of utilitarianism, and that Plato consistently maintained the position that virtue is valuable in itself. He persuasively draws on the distinction between knowledge and true opinion to show that (...)

We live in an era where our health is linked to that of others across the globe, and nothing brings this home better than the specter of a pandemic. This paper explores the findings of town hall meetings associated with the Canadian Program of Research on Ethics in a Pandemic , in which focus groups met to discuss issues related to the global governance of an influenza pandemic. Two competing discourses were found to be at work: the first was (...)

Boussingault versus ville: The social, political and scientific aspects of their disputes.F. W. J. McCosh - 1975 - Annals of Science 32 (5):475-490.
SummaryA feature of mid-nineteenth century scientific debates in France on the subject of plant nutrition was the rivalry, at times acrimonious, between Jean Baptiste Boussingault and Georges Ville. It started in 1848 when Ville was demonstrator to Boussingault, who held one of the two chairs of agriculture at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers. A study of their disputes serves to illustrate their mutual incompatibility, exacerbated by the patronage extended to Ville by his step-brother, Louis Napoléon Bonaparte, afterwards Napoléon III.
